Obituary: Charles Brown

LIBERTY — Charles W. Brown, formerly of Liberty, passed away peacefully on Nov. 6, 2011, after a brief illness at University Hospital in Tamarac, Fla. He was 88.

Born on June 1, 1923, in Casey County, Ky., he was the son of the late Linnie Mae Brown and Matthew Cooper.

Survivors include his dear wife of 62 years, Lillian Douglas Brown; three sons, Doug (Susan), David (Emmy) and Jeff (Kathy); nine grandchildren, Elizabeth, Ellie (Jed), Charles (Johnnie), Bennett, Gatewood, Kyle, Miranda, Lucy and Tommy; and three great-grandchildren, Anna, McKinley and J.D.

Charles owned the Brown Motel and was a partner in Brown's Restaurant, the Kentuckian Theater and the Green River Drive-in Theater. He was a charter member of the Lake Cumberland/Dale Hollow Tourism and Travel Association and a member of Casey County Industrial Association.

After retiring, he was a member of the Coral Baptist Church in Coral Springs, Fla. Previously, he was a member of First Baptist Church of Liberty, where he served as a deacon, church treasurer and leader of Royal Ambassadors.

He was a staff sergeant in the United States Army during World War II, and a Kentucky Colonel.

According to his wishes, his remains will be transported to his hometown of Liberty, Ky., for burial in Glenwood Cemetery.  

Visitation will be 6-9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at McKinney-Brown Funeral Home.  

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Liberty. His first cousin, Bro. Jimmy Brown will officiate.  

Pallbearers will be the deacons of First Baptist Church. Military rites will be performed by the Casey County Funeral Squad.
