Winchester church feeds more than 600 every Thanksgiving

November 21, 2011|By Bob Flynn

Grace Bible Church prides itself on being a community minded ministry, and perhaps nothing it does personifies that more than the yearly community Thanksgiving dinner.

For the past seven years, the church has been serving a complete Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings free to anyone in the community who wishes to come by.

For the past two years, more than 600 people have been fed during the annual meal at Fannie Bush Elementary School located on North Main Street. This year’s Thanksgiving meal begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the school cafeteria, and is open to anyone in the community.

Meals also can be delivered to shut-ins, the elderly and disabled who are not able to come to the school. Pastor Lee Cruse said the church began serving the meal as another way to reach out to people in the community, many of whom would not have a Thanksgiving meal otherwise.

“If you look at our church, we’re not fancy by any means. Everything about our church has always been about ministry and reaching out to the community, so this is just another way for us to minister to the community,” Cruse said. “Anybody is welcome to come and enjoy a really good meal. This is just a way the church is trying to reach out and let them know that somebody cares for them.”

“In this time we are living in, there are a lot of people that are really hurting, so I think we may have even more people this year,” Cruse said.

Grace Bible Church is the sponsor of the meal, but Cruse said without the help of volunteers from many other churches in Clark County, feeding that many people would be impossible.

“Grace Bible is the one that is responsible for it, but a lot of other churches have a part in it too,” Cruse said. “We’ve had members from churches all over the county that have come and said, ‘Can we help?’ That’s what we intended this to be was a community-wide effort to help people in need who might otherwise not have a Thanksgiving meal, and to minister to those needs.”

For more information about the meal, call Grace Bible Church at 737-4722 or Cruse at 749-2868.

“Anybody who wants to come out and volunteer to help with the meal are welcome,” Cruse said.¿“We can always find a something for you to do and you’ll get a real blessing out of it.”
