Lung cancer awareness vigil scheduled

In an effort to raise awareness during Lung Cancer Awareness Month, Big Daddy’s Race for Time and Commonwealth Cancer Center will host a candlelight vigil 6:30 p.m. Nov. 29 at Commonwealth Cancer Center, 520 Techwood Drive in Danville.

One hundred lung cancer vigils representing all 50 states and Washington, D.C., are scheduled to be held during November. Speakers, including local lung cancer survivors and medical professionals from Commonwealth Cancer Center, will be featured during Danville’s vigil.

Higher Ed Center accepting donations for military Christmas project 

LANCASTER — The Lancaster Higher Education Center is accepting donations through Dec. 3 for Operation SEND Christmas. Donations can be delivered to 67 Public Square. The center will use the donations to make care packages for troops from Kentucky deployed overseas. The center will have a community reception 4-6:30 p.m. Dec. 2 when people can drop off items, decorate a Christmas card and enjoy refreshments. For more information, call (859) 792-1513.

Course available on dealing with difficult people

LANCASTER — The Lancaster Higher Education Center is offering a session on dealing with difficult people from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 13 at 67 Public Square, Lancaster. The course emphasizes communication and flexible thinking as key methods of dealing with difficult people. The cost is significantly reduced for the community of Lancaster. Boyle County Public Library events planned

Upcoming events

  • The Boyle County Public Library will be closed Thanksgiving and will reopen 9 a.m. Friday.
  • Sounding Joy, a community women’s choir directed by Barbara Hall, will present the program, “Noel: A Small Musical Gift” 2 p.m. Dec. 4 at the library.
  • The Danville High School Forensic Team will present the program “Let Us Entertain You” 4 p.m. Dec. 14 at the library.
  • Emily Clark’s work will be displayed through November in the Mahan Gallery.

Fall film series

The Friends of the Library fall film series, presented by Charles Vahlkamp, is titled, “America in the Movies” and features American film classics that deal with specific episodes in American history. The films are shown 7 p.m. Thursday evenings in the library’s meeting room and followed by discussions led by Vahlkamp. The films are free and open to the public. There is no movie Thanksgiving day. The Dec. 1 movie is a 1934 King Vidor Depression Era film about farm families working together to survive. The movie stars Tom Keene and Karen Morley.

Book club

Book discussions are 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. on the scheduled Thursdays and everyone is welcome to attend.

Discussion books are available at the library’s circulation desk one month in advance of the discussion. December’s selection, which will be discussed Dec. 15, is “Winter’s Bone” by Daniel Woodrell. The book can be picked up at the circulation desk now, but copies are limited.
