Parks director resigns

Remley accepts similar job in Georgetown

November 30, 2011|By Bob Flynn

The Winchester Parks and Recreation Department will be looking for a new director following the resignation of Geri Remley.

In a Nov. 28 letter to the Parks Board and Chairman Charlie Eury, Remley stated that she would be leaving the position she’s held since April 2009, effective Friday, Dec. 16.

Remley is leaving the Clark County post to take a similar job as director of the Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department.

Remley, who lives in Georgetown, said the move was bittersweet because she has made some good friends in Clark County.

“I’ve really enjoyed serving this community, and it’s an honor to leave my footprint here and to be a part of the growth that is going to occur within this department. I think there is a good foundation for the right person to come in and breathe new life into it,” Remley said. “I’d like to thank the board, staff, volunteers and all the individuals who supported me within the community. The friendships I made in Clark County, I will be taking with me.”

Eury said that even though Remley’s resignation was a “great loss” for the department, he was happy for her for landing a job with one of the premier parks departments in the state.

“Geri has done so much here to help move this department to another level, so I am sad to see her leave,” Eury said. “But on the other hand, I’m happy for her because she is moving to one of the truly great parks and recreation jobs in all of Kentucky.”

The Clark County position was Remley’s first as a director, and she had to hit the ground running because the department broke ground for the new aquatic center two weeks after her arrival.

Eury said that Remley’s tenure was good for both her and the department.

“Geri has done a tremendous job of building on the work done by former director Donnie Parsons and elevating this department to a higher level, and at the same time, she’s grown so much as a director,” Eury said. “I’m glad we happened to be the spot she chose to start her professional career, and I’m honored that we were able to have a part in getting her to a position to where she could get this job, because in Kentucky, the Georgetown parks and rec job ranks right there with Louisville and Lexington as one of the best in the state.”

The Parks Board has called a special board meeting for 5 p.m. Friday to consider Remley’s resignation and to approve advertising for the vacant director position.

Eury said he expected the job to be advertised by Dec. 7, and hoped to have a new director chosen by the end of the month.
