Seeing double: George Rogers Clark High School Cardinals meet Montgomery County Indians in doubleheader

December 08, 2011|By Keith Taylor

It’s rivalry week for the George Rogers Clark boys basketball team.

The Cardinals, who dropped a 56-49 setback to Madison¿Central earlier this week, will take on another set of Indians, Friday night in Mount Sterling as part of a doubleheader with the girls’ basketball team.
The Lady Cardinals and Lady Indians will tip off at 6 p.m., followed by the Cardinals and Indians at 7:30 p.m.,

Clark (2-1) has won 10 in a row over the Indians and hasn’t lost to its border rivals since Montgomery County won two of three games between the two schools during the 2007-08 season, winning two regular-season games, before the Cardinals avoided a season sweep by defeating the Indians in the 40th District finals. Overall, Clark has won 16 of the last 18 games between the two foes.

Clark coach Scott Humphrey expects a close contest against the Indians, who have reeled off three straight games to open the season.

“They’ll be ready for us,” Humphrey said. “This time of year, we’re more concerned with Clark County than our opponent. We have to get better and play smarter than we did (Tuesday night).”

On the girls side, Clark coach Scott True also expects another close encounter with the Lady Indians, who lost six in a row to Clark before the Lady Indians broke the streak with a 58-51 win in last year’s 10th Region final at Bourbon County.

“Montgomery County is top 20 in the state, deservedly so. They didn’t graduate anybody from last year that played, so it’s going to be a big challenge for us,” True said. “Make no mistake about it. I’m not a coach that says its just another game because it’s not. I know it and the kids know it. So we’ll prep them for it, go over our usual stuff and get them out there under the lights and see how they do.

“It will be a learning experience for us and hopefully we’ll handle it and do the things we’re supposed to do under the lights.”
