“They freaked out in the beginning. We had several kids sick, hurting and everything like that,” West coach Steve Greene said. “And playing sick and tired and hurt against a team like that, it compounds any error that you make.”

Shelby Hawkins scored 17 points and Erin Conner scored eight points and pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for the Colts. Chelsea Gill had 14 points, seven steals, seven rebounds and three assists for the Rebels. Hannah Harris had 17 points and four steals while Natalie Settle had 11 points, five steals and four assists. Dee Foster also had six steals as the Rebels forced 35 turnovers, 31 of those coming off steals.

Boyle’s press was effective early. Settle’s three-pointer off a turnover put the Rebels up 9-2.

Back-to-back three-pointers from Harris, the last off a turnover, made it 21-2 Boyle. Boyle had 11 of its 21 points off turnovers in that first quarter.

Shelby Bishop’s layup made it 26-8, then Mary Fyfe drilled another three-pointer to put the Rebels ahead 29-10 with 3:55 left in the half. But the Colts started coming back, getting the bulk of their points at the foul line.

Allison Mims converted a three-point play, Emma Baxter hit two free throws and Hawkins knocked down a three-pointer to cut the lead to 29-18. The Colts scored six of the final eight points of the quarter to trim Boyle’s lead to 33-24 at the half.

“We settled down; we got used it,” Greene said of Boyle’s press. “I said just calm down; do what you know you are capable of doing; don’t get frustrated with yourself.”

West Jessamine went 9-for-11 at the line in the first half and 17-for-19 for the game. Greene thought getting to the line was key for his team getting back in the game.

“Against a team that presses, if you can get to the free-throw line, you get to catch your breath,” he said.

A lot of those trips to the line came when Boyle fouled in the press. Boyle cut down on the fouls in the second half, not even getting into the bonus, and opened up another big lead midway through the third quarter.

Gill hit a jumper and had a steal and layup to make it 41-28. Fyfe then hit a jumper and Emmie Harris scored off another turnover to push the lead to 45-28. The Colts never got closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Thanks to all the turnovers, Boyle took 33 more shots than the Colts, going 25-of-67 from the floor, and made 6-of-17 three-pointers. West Jessamine was 14-of-34 from the field.

The bigger Colts did outrebound Boyle 35-26, but Boyle had an 11-6 edge in offensive boards.
