Community prayer service scheduled for Saturday

January 05, 2012|By Rachel Parsons

Clark County Judge-Executive Henry Branham and Winchester Mayor Ed Burtner hope to get 2012 off to a great start. Saturday, community members are invited to do their part by attending a special prayer service, focusing on government and civic organizations.

“It’s a way, in my judgment, to start the year off on a positive note,” Burtner said.

Burtner and Branham organized the event several years ago and have been pleased with the turnout. The event also draws attention to the faith-based community, which “provides an awful lot of services to the community,” Burtner said.

Different people will pray for specific groups, including law enforcement, government officials, armed forces and schools.

Members of the Clark County Drug Coalition will use the event as a kick-off for its year-long prayer campaign. According to coalition leader Steve Humble, each month members will pray for Clark County, focusing on the theme of reconciliation. The Clark County Association of Churches also is supporting the effort.

Branham will open the service in prayer, the City Commissioner Rick Beach will pray for volunteers, George Thacker will pray for military personnel, John Pumphrey will pray for public officials, Clark County Superintendent Elaine Farris will pray for the school system and students, Clark County Fire Department Battalion Chief Ernie Barnes will pray for first responder, Jeff Holman will pray for religious leaders and Burtner will pray for what he calls “the most vulnerable”¿in the community.

This year’s event will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Christview Christian Church on Boonesboro Road.
