May murder trial date set for Spicer

January 06, 2012|By Fred Petke

A May 14 trial date was set Thursday for murder suspect Justin Spicer, barely more than a year after he allegedly shot and killed 63-year-old Dallas Hall in a dispute over a gun.

Spicer, 23, has been incarcerated in the Clark County Detention Center since his arrest in June 2011 on murder, first-degree burglary and tampering with physical evidence charges.

Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said previously that Spicer confessed to killing Hall and taking three firearms following a dispute at Hall’s home on Little Stoner Road May 2. He told detectives in June that he got into an argument with Hall, which turned physical. Spicer said he took Hall’s .380 handgun and shot him. Hall fled the scene with the gun and sold it to someone else, Perdue said. Spicer said he returned and took two other guns, which he also sold. All three were recovered during the investigation, Perdue said.

Deputies also recovered several .380 ammunition casings from the scene.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Charles Johnson said he is still waiting on blood evidence to be analyzed by the lab, and that an impending trial may speed the process up. Spicer’s attorney David Ward said he thought the trial would take three to five days to complete.

Hall’s son Jason found his father’s body lying outside the home when he went to check on him May 2, after he said he wasn’t feeling well the day before. Dallas Hall was already dead when Jason Hall found him.

Perdue said Spicer had been a suspect since the case opened, but that it took time to put everything together. Once deputies located the firearms, they connected them with Spicer, he said.
