Burgin school board is appreciated

January 09, 2012

January is local School Board Appreciation Month in Kentucky. We have an opportunity to thank and recognize our local school boards for the jobs they perform in helping educate our workforce and population. It seems that only the negative side of board functions and school systems ever get media attention, but there are many who do their jobs well and function as a cohesive unit.

The Burgin Board of Education is a perfect example of a proper functioning and efficient local school board. They make decisions based on thorough input, scrutiny of data and what is best for the entire school system, with student interest coming first. They are the first seeds of excellence that permeate the entire Burgin school system. In short, the Burgin Board of Education conducts business with a dignity and class unmatched by many of their peers.

I know this because it has been my honor and privilege to serve these outstanding board members for the past 14 years as their superintendent. They have been a tremendous support to me and other administrators as we have guided our system into the 21st century. They have been instrumental in leading Burgin to the top in many categories that measure schools. They have done this while maintaining and growing the best climate and culture (for students and teachers) of any school system that I have been a part of in my 34 years (and eight school systems) as an educator.

Our board works very hard at providing a top quality education, and they do this without compensation of any kind. For at least the last 14 years, our board has not taken the stipend due to them for their services. You don’t see very many boards doing that.

If you happen to see Bob Clark, Keith Monson, Donna Major, Lynn Russell or Priscilla Harris, please take the time to thank them for their service to our school and children. At Burgin, it is a labor of love, and it shows in the quality they produce.

Richard W. Webb
