Helen Combs Smith: Jan. 11, 2012

Helen Combs Smith, 72, of Stanton, Ky., formerly of Winchester, passed away on Jan. 11, 2012, at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.


Born in Powell County, she was the daughter of the late Doyle F. and Florida Sparks Combs. She was a former factory employee of Wintech in Winchester, and she was a member of the Estill County and Powell County historical societies.


In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin Combs and Howard Combs, and by her half-sister, Carolyn Tipton.


Surviving relatives are her daughter, Opal Dawn Smith of Lexington; two brothers, Forest Combs of Winchester and James Combs of Lexington; four sisters, Vernetta Watts of Stanton, Lovisa Taulbee, Velma (Bobby) Bailey and Sondra Morgan all of Winchester; a half-brother, Doyle Combs Jr. of northern Kentucky; a half-sister, Brenda Curtis of Paris; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation begins at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, and funeral services officiated by Bro. David Bowden will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 15 at Hearne Funeral Home, 125 W. College Ave. in Stanton. Interment will be in the Knox Cemetery, South Fork Road, in Stanton with Roy D. “Ace” Watts Jr., Roger Taulbee, Glyn Combs, Wayne Combs, Simon Rogers and Syl Knox serving as pallbearers.
