Teens and others in town are not waiting for an official identification to begin grieving the death of a driver who died Saturday morning in a fiery car crash in Danville. Messages of sadness and loss are already posted on Facebook, and kids in town are comforting each other, reeling from the shock.

Boyle County Coroner Don Hamner said it may take a few days to identify the driver, a white male, who was the sole occupant of a vehicle involved in the crash fatality. DNA likely will be used for identification, he said, to confirm what police may have learned from a license plate that was recovered from the fence at the scene.

The condition of the vehicle was disturbing even to the seasoned driver of the tow truck who says he had to drag the car down a bank from where it finally came to rest on a hillside.

“I’ve been doing this for 18 years and I’ve never seen anything like it. Never,” said Don Reed of Don and Pattie’s Service Center at 641 W. Shelby St. in Junction City. He said he got the call at 8:29 a.m. to come pick up the vehicle police say crashed about 5:24 a.m. Saturday.

According to the initial report, the vehicle appeared to have been traveling west on Ky. 2168, entered the bypass and left the road where it struck an embankment and then a tree, which caused the vehicle to flip onto the roof and slide through a fence before coming to a stop on the hillside. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when police arrived on the scene. The accident closed the southbound lane of the bypass up to Ky. 2168 for about four hours, or until Reed had finished his work.

Danville Police Sgt. Jonathan Courtwright could not say if speed or road conditions played a part in the spectacular crash but conceded one or both factors probably played a part.

Officer Jamie Ferrie of Danville Police Department is in charge of the investigation.
