The Nicholasville Fire Department’s engine No. 1 responded to a No. 2 problem Tuesday afternoon at Lake Mingo Park.

Firefighters caught wind of a portable toilet on fire in the parking lot shortly before 4:30 p.m. and found flames shooting from the unit on arrival.

“It was a small nuisance fire; it burned through the side of the Porta-John,” Lt. Marty Kazsuk said.

The fire was extinguished quickly, leaving some damage to the toilet. Kazsuk said the cause was “suspicious” and that the fire department had turned the investigation over to the Nicholasville Police Department. No one was hurt.

Eugene Courtney of Lexington was fishing in the lake when he turned around and saw the unit in the parking lot on fire.

“Some little boys on up there said, ‘Should we call the fire department?’ I said, ‘Son, it’s going to burn down if you don’t,’” Courtney said. “... I heard fire trucks very shortly after I heard them holler.”

Courtney returned to his fishing once the fire department arrived. He said his day out had turned out to be more exciting than he had anticipated.

“Yeah, I didn’t know they were going to burn the crapper down,” he said. “A man might need that baby, you know?”
