The newest addition to The Journal’s news staff is new to Jessamine County but not to central Kentucky.
Benjamin Rossi, 29, comes to The Journal as a staff writer after nearly three years in various capacities at the Georgetown News-Graphic.

Rossi moved around the country in a military family growing up but settled into school at Angelo State University in west Texas, where he graduated in 2006 with a journalism degree and a minor in graphic design. He said he started doing journalism for discipline in his life.

“I call it my writing boot camp, because I was totally undisciplined,” Rossi said. “I wasn’t writing every day; I was just lollygagging about, so I¿consider journalism school my boot camp. It disciplined me a lot.”
The scenery struck Rossi as soon as he got to Kentucky. He currently lives in Lexington near the Fayette County-Jessamine County line.

“Being in Texas, it’s flat as far as the eye can see,” he said. “Here, there’s trees and there’s snow, and the seasons change — that’s the greatest thing ever. You’ll be here for a couple months and it’s green, and then it starts turning orange and gold. It’s just gorgeous.”

In Georgetown, Rossi worked as sports editor and graphic designer and also wrote news stories. His areas of coverage at The Journal include the Wilmore City Council, the Jessamine County Fiscal Court, and the Nicholasville Planning Commission in addition to photography, editing and other writing assignments. He replaces former staff writer Laura Butler.

"We are fortunate to have someone like Ben Rossi available,” Journal managing editor Mike Moore said. “He's a bright guy with loads of talent. I expect him to fit right in and contribute right away."
Rossi said his favorite part of journalism is learning about broad subject matter.

“I¿love the fact that we get to learn about everything; I¿enjoy that,” he said. “We get to write about so many different things, different people and their jobs, different families and the good things they live through and the bad things they live through ... We’re kind of archiving people’s lives, and I¿have quite a sense of pride as far as that’s concerned.”

Rossi can be reached at brossi@jessaminejournal.com or 859-885-5381, ext. 242.
