Longtime state Rep. Bob Damron, D-Nicholasville, will have a race for re-election this year regardless of how redistricting battles fall.

Nicholasville Republican Matt Lockett filed to run for the Kentucky House's 39th District seat Friday afternoon hours before the 4 p.m. deadline, according to the Kentucky secretary of state website.

Lockett was also involved in the 2010 elections, running for the Republican nomination for Kentucky's 6th District seat in the United States House of Representatives. He lost in the primary to Andy Barr, who fell to incumbent Democrat Ben Chandler in the general election.

Jessamine County could have one other candidate in the state House elections, depending on the outcome of an appeal to the Kentucky Supreme Court.

Republican David Thornton of 128 Sagart Lane in Nicholasville registered as a candidate for the 45th District seat Jan. 31 when then-approved redistricting had moved thousands of Jessamine residents into the Lexington district currently represented by Republican Stan Lee. The redistricting was ruled unconstitutional by a judge Tuesday; an appeal the state's high court is expected to be heard next week.

Lexington's Chris Tyler is the third Republican currently registered for the 45th District seat, according to the secretary of state's website. No Democrats are registered for that seat. Damron and Lockett are the only two 39th District candidates.
