Prep Basketball: Mercer girls win 12th straight game with 39-30 win at Garrard County

February 14, 2012

The Mercer County girls won their 12th straight game Monday, winning a defensive battle at Garrard County 39-30.

Cawood Dedman had 12 points and three assists, Tabby Shewmaker had eight points and Savannah Taylor had seven points and nine boards for the Titans (23-5), who led 21-13 at the half and 29-19 after three quarters.

“It was a really ugly game. Both teams played really good defensively, I thought,” Mercer coach Chris Souder said. “It was really physical, so it was hard for either team to play well.”

Mercer was 11 of 41 from the floor, going 4-for-19 from 3-point range, and hit 13 of 20 at the foul line.

Garrard (18-10) was led by Devin Conley’s 17 points. But Garrard got bad knews when Kelly Smith, who miseed last year with a knee injury, went down with an injury to the same knee two minutes into the game. Devin Napier was already out with a knee injury.

“Our girls played really hard.  We were under some difficult circumstances and playing against a really well coached team,” Garrard coach Scott Bolin said. “ I was proud of our efforts. We are hoping for the best today when both Devin and Kelly go to the doctor.”

Danville 49, Somerset 39 — At Danville, Jordan Leavell had her second straight double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Admirals (18-6) avenged their loss to Somerset in the 12th Region All “A” final.

Kasey Young scored 10 points for Danville, which jumped out to an 11-0 lead and never looked back in beating the Briar Jumpers (12-13).

“We kind of relaxed after that (lead),” Danville coach Judie Mason said. “It was kind of an ugly game really. We had a bit of a letdown, which I guess is to be expected, after the Lincoln game (a 70-51 win Friday).”

Danville led 24-10 at the half and 43-31 after three quarters.

Lincoln County 78, Woodford 59 — At Stanford, Emily Fox poured in 24 points and Sydney Harris added 19 as the Patriots (18-9) used a big second half to pull away from Woodford (18-11).
