Prep Basketball: Casey County hangs on to edge Burgin 50-43 in the girls 12th Region Tournament

STANFORD — Tiara Cochran scored 16 of her 23 points in the second half Tuesday and Casey County hung on to down Burgin 50-43 in the first round of the 12th Region Tournament at Lincoln County.
Jasmine Johnson added 12 points, including four straight free throws in the final 8 seconds to secure the win for the Rebels (18-14), who advanced to Friday’s semifinals where they will face Wayne County (19-14). Wayne beat Danville 55-51 in Tuesday’s first game.
Down by double digits in the third quarter, Burgin (13-19) fought back to cut Casey’s lead to 31-26 heading to the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs cut the lead ot two three times, the last at 39-37 on a free throw from Shavon Majors with 2:12 to play.
But Cochran answered with two free throws 10 seconds later, and she scored five straight points to make ti 44-37 Casey with 56.8 seconds to play. A 3-pointer from Burgin’s Liz Marcinek made it  46-43 game with 12 seconds left, but Johnson made her final four at the line to seal the win.
Majors finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead Burgin, which was 12 of 29 from the floor but made just 17 of 31 free throws. Marcinek had 15 points and five boards as Burgin held a 28-18 edge on the glass.
Casey was 14 of 41 from the field, making four of 17 free throws and hit 18 of 24 at the line.
