Food, supplies being collected for Kentucky tornado victims

March 07, 2012|By Mike Moore | mmoore@jessaminejournal.com

As the Eastern Kentucky towns of West Liberty and Salyersville continue in the early stages of recovering from the EF3 tornado that ravaged their respective communities, Nicholasville and Jessamine County firefighters are continuing their efforts to help those residents by collecting nonperishable food items.

“There is a group in Morehead that feeds needy people,” Nicholasville firefighter Jerry Stephens said. “They see the need there (West Liberty and Salyersville), so they made contact in Frankfort, and they’ve set them up a place to feed people. This past Saturday, they fed between 800 and 900 people in Morgan County and another 100 people in Magoffin County.”

Stephens said since the state gave the group approval to open a kitchen to feed residents, local fire departments are now collecting nonperishable food items to help the cause.

“We’ve set up a place here to supply them,” Stephens said. “We are collecting any kind of (nonperishable) food donations. Things like pork and beans, green beans, corn — the larger the can the better; we will take anything.”

Stephens said the fire departments are also collecting cleaning supplies such as disinfectants and window cleaner, and personal hygiene items like toothbrushes, soap and toothpaste to distribute.

City fire station No. 2, located at 1022 S. Main St., and Jessamine County Fire Station No. 2, located at 1310 S. Main St., are the collection sites. Items can be dropped off at either location Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Items will be stored at the county station until enough is gathered for a truck delivery.

Stephens said the need is and continues to be great in Morgan and Magoffin counties.

“Between 500 to 800 is what they are expecting to feed daily in Morgan County, and about 100 people a day in Magoffin County,” he said.
