Danville overcame four unearned runs to defeat Pulaski County 7-4 on Monday at Somerset.
The 14th-ranked Admirals (3-0) made the most of seven hits to defeat the Maroons (0-2), one of three other 12th Region teams receiving votes in the preseason coaches’ poll.
They took a 5-2 lead with three runs in the fifth inning, then tacked on two runs in the seventh inning. Pulaski’s runs were the result of two Danville errors.
“We need to shore up our bunt coverages ... but it was a good game ... another team that could be in contention in the regional tournament come the end of the year,” Danville coach Paul Morse said.
Starting pitcher Austin Baxter struck out six batters and allowed one hit and no walks over five innings, and Rob Caudill earned the save with three strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings.
Caudill was 2 for 3 at the plate with a double and two stolen bases, Rhodes Bell was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and pinch-hitter Nick Serey added an RBI single in the seventh inning.
Anderson County 5, Mercer County 3 — At Harrodsburg, defending 12th Region champion Mercer (0-1) dropped its season opener to Anderson (1-0) after committing four errors.
The Bearcats led 4-0 after 2 1/2 innings. The Titans pulled within one run in the fifth but couldn’t catch up.
“We just came out a little tight, a little inexperienced,” Mercer coach Jeremy Shope said. “I feel like we’ve got a very talented team, but nerves got hold of us early and we committed several errors early in the ballgame.”
Losing pitcher John Ingram allowed one earned run with six strikeouts in five innings.
Seth Heath had a two-run double in the third inning and Tyler Devine drove in a run in the fifth for the Titans.
Sayre 10, Burgin 4 — At Lexington, Burgin led 4-0 after two innings, but host Sayre came back and handed the Bulldogs a loss in a game shortened due to darkness.
Hunter Harrison and Jared Robbins had RBIs for Burgin, Austin Shewmaker was 2 for 3 with a double, and Robbins took the loss.
