March 20, 2012|Sun staff report

To highlight the availability of the School Breakfast Program, Clark County Public Schools participated in the National School Breakfast Week campaign.

Every school day the CCPS  breakfast program offers students the healthy foods they need to be prepared for a busy school day. Every school breakfast served meets federal nutrition standards limiting fat and portion size.

During the “School Breakfast — Go for Gold” campaign, cafeterias offered fun activity sheets to help students warm up their brains.

The district also hosted a school T-shirt design contest highlighting the benefits of eating a healthy breakfast.

Winners from each school level received $25 awarded by the Clark County School Nutrition Association. The winning designs were also entered for a chance to win $100 in the state contest.

Students also had chances to win prizes such as backpacks, water bottles, flying discs, basketballs and Hibbett Sports gift cards, just by eating breakfast at school each day during the national program.

“It’s a race for any family to get their kids ready, fed and out the door in time for school,” Becky Lowery, CCPS school nutrition director said. “Knowing that your child can eat a healthy breakfast after they get to school can be a huge relief for parents.”
