Johnny Edwin McNiel, 90, of Temple and Dallas, Texas, passed away Monday, March 12, 2012.

Survivors include a son, Wayne (Linda “Andy”) McNiel of Winchester.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Juanita Julia Nielsen McNiel.

A native of Dallas, he was born April 18, 1921, to the late William Zachary McNiel and Lillie Mae Murphy McNiel. He was wed to Juanita Julia Nielsen McNiel Oct. 12, 1941, and remained married to her until her death, Sept. 11, 2008.

An accountant, he received a bachelor’s degree from Southern Methodist University in 1949. He joined the United States Army in 1942 and served as a radio operator in the Pacific theater of operations during World War II, serving under Gen. Douglas MacArthur. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and earned two Bronze Stars, among other medals, during his service. He served as deacon and elder at the Piedmont Church of Christ in Dallas, and as minister of the Linda Heights Church of Christ in Dallas and the Eastern Hills Church of Christ in Garland, Texas.


Other survivors include sons Terry McNiel of Temple, Texas, and Kevin (Tanya) McNiel of Gunter, Texas. He is also survived by grandchildren Whitney McNiel of Cincinnati, Ohio, Jason (Kerri)┬┐McNiel of Winchester, Ashley (Michael) Lewis of Somerset, Leslie (Alvin) Pasley of Berea, Joshua McNiel of Winchester, Ariana (James) Orten of Crossville, Tenn., Damon McNiel of Los Angeles, Elizabeth (Justin) Wallis of Howe, Texas, and Emily McNiel of Gunter, Texas. Other survivors include great-grandchildren Jacob McNiel of Winchester, Kyler, Kendall and Cameron Payne of Crossville, Tenn., Matthew and Hailey Pasley of Berea, and Rebecca Wallis of Howe, Texas. He is also survived by a sister, Vergie McNiel of Mesquite, Texas, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by sisters Lillie Belle Ragland, Gladys Donihoo and Margie Yarbrough, and brothers William McNiel, Charles “Bill” McNiel and Virgil McNiel and two great-grandchildren, Casey and Christian Pasley.

Funeral services were held at the Eastgate Funeral┬┐Home in Garland, Texas, on Thursday, March 15 with burial with military honors at Grove Hill Cemetery in Dallas, Texas.
