A Clay County man was killed around 10 a.m. Friday in a single-vehicle accident outside of Crab Orchard.

Family members at the scene identified the man as James Layton, 51, of Manchester.

Lincoln County Sheriff Curt Folger said that Layton was traveling west on US 150 in a Ford F-150 when he attempted to pass another vehicle, over-corrected, crossed into the east bound lane and left the highway. The crash occurred at the intersection of South and North Delaney Road.

Firefighters from Station 6 in Broughtontown had to extricate Layton from the vehicle. Deputy Coroner Don Gilliam pronounced Layton dead at the scene.

Kentucky State Trooper First Class Eric Taylor said that Layton was not wearing his seat belt and he does not suspect that alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
