About a dozen souls stood in solemn respect facing the American Flag as it was raised in dedication Saturday at noon outside the new Danville AmVets Post 123 location at 850 Stanford Road.

The new location was obtained about six months ago, according to Robert Robbins, who is the adjunct and financial officer for the post, and was remodeled to suit the purposes of the group.

Saturday’s ceremony was a “grand opening” of sorts for the new location.

The raised flag is also an invitation to area vets who may be unaware of the organization to consider becoming members.

“We serve vets in every aspect possible,”¿Robbins said. “We hold benefits to raise money for the veterans hospitals and if, say, the wife of a vet needs a handicap ramp built, we build it. Whatever is needed, we will be there.”

Post Commander Bill Edwards said any veteran that shows up at the door with a need will get help.

“We also are involved in Toys for Tots and things like that and partner with the VFW,¿too, for events,” he said. “Anything for veterans. We love them all.”

The post also serves in the civilian world much like a joint officers and enlisted club for active duty on bases.

“We have a canteen here,”¿Robbins said.

The dark interior of the club is a social hall with cold beer and pool tables.

“Karaoke, even,” said Brandon Anderson, First Vice Commander.

Many of the members are from the Vietnam era or older, Edwards said, so Anderson typifies the veteran they would like to reach who my not know about the club. Anderson, 28,  is good-naturedly called the “baby” of the group.

“I¿served in Afghanistan, Iraq, after joining in 2002,” Anderson said.

“We had a fish fry here Friday night,” Robbins said. “We hope to have more of these types of things especially in May, which is Military Appreciation Month.”

The post has a website, www.amvetspost123.com, and can be reached at (859) 236-1234. Members pay dues but all positions are staffed by volunteers.
