Mercer school board chairman responds

April 25, 2012

Last year, when Mr. Hamilton turned in his resignation, we as a school board voted to hire an interim superintendent. After several interviews, we as a board selected Dennis Davis as that interim superintendent.

We voted to hire Phil Eason to manage the superintendent selection process. The selection committee was formed with parents, employees and community members, all stakeholders had a voice and were asked to give input to the selection committee. Surveys were used with little response.

As we came to the time of the interview, rumors abound. I could not be more shocked or disappointed in the behavior of a group of educated professionals. The goal of this board was to find the very best candidate for the position.

Despite the rumors, no decision was made until after all final candidates were interviewed, and evaluated. The actions of those who organized a petition, sent emails to board members the week of interviews, and those who tried to make a mockery of a school board meeting last week, served only to disrupt the process.

We have  been accused of continuing the “good old boy” system one day only to hear rumors that we do not support the administrators the next day.

But, every decision made by this board is done with the education of our students our only goal. The selection of superintendent is no different.

We have selected the applicant we feel has not only a good vision for the future of Mercer County Schools, but the ability to lead the schools to that future. Someone who will be able to make those hard unpopular decisions and someone who can rally the employees of the school system behind him.

He will be a leader but not necessarily a friend. This individual has a vision to bring our schools to a  TOP 10 district where our students learn to compete in all levels to include classroom and extracurricular activities. He will work to hold each stakeholder accountable to include parents, teachers and administrators.

Jim Stinnett, chairman

Mercer County Board of Education
