Crime reports in Wilmore have tripled in last four months

Incident reports of crime in Wilmore has tripled since January, according to a comprehensive analysis provided the city’s police department.

The report raised eyebrows and questions during Monday night’s Wilmore City Council meeting.

Citizens had complained to some city-council members that there had been six possibly drug-related burglaries in a single day in April.

That information was untrue; however, there were four reports of second-degree burglary and two reports of third-degree burglary for the month of April.

In the past four months, there have been a total of 14 burglary incidents, six of which were in April.

“If they had been all in one day, that would be cause for concern, and I would have called (Mayor Harold) Rainwater immediately,” police chief Bill Craig said. “They were spread out for the most part, but there has been a rise in criminal reports since January, and that can be for any number of reasons.”

Craig said police are still investigating the burglaries, one of which was a set of coins, but they do not believe they are all related and could not say if there were drugs involved.

Craig said that his department has started the monthly comprehensive reports to monitor trends in the community to identify peak times and trends in offenses.

The report is compiled by Wilmore officers during their shifts and shows that Thursday is by far the day of the highest amount of criminal reports.

In all, the report showed a steady growth from 14 reports in January to 23 reports in February, 25 in March and 39 total in April for a community of 6,000 residents.

As far as why there is a rise, Craig said it can be for any number of reasons, including the economy, warmer weather or even the increase of tourists from outside Wilmore who are just passing through.

Craig  also said his department is compiling the data so they can determine how to best address crime in Wilmore.
