Thunderstorms and lightning washed out the final two and a half innings of West Jessamine baseball’s trip to Whitaker Bank Ballpark in Lexington on Monday night.

Between the top and bottom of the fifth inning, a lightning strike put the game on a delay, and heavy rain and more lightning strikes over the next 16 minutes resulted in the calling of the game. No. 6 West Jessamine, the home team, led 3-1 at the time, and the game was ruled official.

West was lucky the rain came as late as it did as the Colts were trailing 1-0 after three innings and didn’t get a baserunner of a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning.

With one out in the fourth, Trey Merida drew a walk, and two batters later, Tyler Pasch drew a walk to put the go-ahead run on base. Senior Tyler Ward came through with a screaming line drive to right field.

Merida came around to score. The throw into home plate was off the mark and allowed Pasch to score as well. Ward ended up on second base.

Senior Michael Oaks then knocked a single up the middle to score Ward and make it a 3-1 game.
Ward and Oaks accounted for West’s only two hits.

The Colts used three pitchers in the abbreviated game. Matt Yeich got the start and went two innings, allowing a hit and striking out two. Jarred Jones took over in the third and went two innings. Jones gave up a run in the third (unearned), allowed two hits, hit two batters and struck out three. Zach Settle took the mound in the top of the fifth inning. After hitting the lead-off man and giving up a one-out single, Settle and the West defense got out of the inning unscathed. He struck out two.

On Tuesday night, the Colts defeated Southwestern to run their record to 24-3 overall and 10-1 in the region.

West Jessamine defeated Shelby County 13-1 last Friday. Tyler Adams, Tyler Ward and Troy Merida each drove in two runs. Ward had two doubles.

Zach Settle threw a complete game (five innings). He struck out eight and scattered four hits.
