When George Rogers Clark needed a win, it turned to its ace.
Derek McKenzie threw a three-hitter to lead the Cardinals to an exciting 3-2 victory over Lexington Christian Thursday afternoon at Cardinal Field.
McKenzie went the distance, collected five strikeouts and walked just one batter in seven innings.
The two teams were involved in a 2-2 deadlock, until Clark (15-13) scored the eventual game-winning run in the sixth inning. Wes Lawwill reached on a double to lead off the inning and pinch runner Malik Warner eventually scored on a one-out sacrifice fly by Matt Williams.
Logan McQuerry paced Clark’s offensive attack with a pair of hits, including a double, followed by Brent Stoneking, Lawwill, Williams and Robert Hatler with one hit each. Stoneking’s lone hit of the contest was a double.
Lexington Christian slipped to 18-13 on the season with the loss.
Clark will play at Bryan Station Monday at 5:30 p.m. and concludes the regular season with a game against Pulaski County at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Cardinal Field.
