LIBERTY — The chorus of Fun.’s current hit song “We Are Young” could have been custom written for a graduation ceremony.

Tonight

We are young

So let’s set the world on fire

We can burn brighter

Than the sun

Some of the song’s other lyrics, however, are a bit too party-centric to pass muster with the decorum council, so senior Derrick Wesley did a little customization of his own, replacing the offending passages with mentions of “caps and gowns” and “Class of 2012.”

With Wesley at the piano and classmate Ashley McQueary joining him at the microphone, Casey County High School’s 2012 graduating class made the song its own Saturday evening, standing to sing the chorus in unison in one of the night’s most poignant moments.

Other graduates put their personal touches on the class’ collective experience over the past four years.

In a welcoming speech, Shauna Wardrip reminded parents to “be proud of yourselves. You have raised a respectful young adult” and advised classmates to “Never go to bed with regrets and never let anyone tell you something isn’t awesome.”

Whitney Lawhorn remembered fallen classmate Olivia Shugars, “who would have a big smile on her face right now,” and implored the class to hold on to the bonds they forged during their time together, even as it prepares to dissolve into an unknown future.

“Remember always, we are all Casey County Rebels,” she said.

Class president Ashtan Ryan struggled with her emotions as she retraced steps from passing notes in elementary school to gaining an appreciation for the opposite sex in middle school to high school, “where your friends were kids who shared your interests, not your crayons.”

“We’ve grown emotionally and physically, and learned to take things one day at a time. The one thing that matters above all is the Class of 2012 has stuck together,” Ryan continued. “How do you say goodbye? You don’t. You say hello to the people we’ve become over the last four years.”
