The parent-teacher organization at Rosenwald-Dunbar Elementary School is impacting technology in the school with its fundraising outside the school.
The PTO raised $37,000 last year that went to revive the computer lab with 24 new Mac computers while sending the older 24 computers into classrooms. But the impact could be even bigger next year, as this year’s fundraising total has surpassed $60,000.
Giving parents background on the need for new technology has been key to fundraising, said Amy Waymire, president of the PTO.
“They’re giving back to the school,” she said. “They may not be able to come in and volunteer their hours, or they may not be able to come and help out in the classroom, but this is a way they can give back to the school.”
The money raised this year will go to purchase some new computers along with items from “wish lists” that each grade level made, Waymire said. Last year’s funds also purchased a new sound system for the music room, a new computer for the art teacher and an iPad for the gym teacher.
