Tabby Shewmaker threw a three-inning no-hitter Monday as Mercer County advanced to the championship of the 46th District Tournament with a 15-0 victory over Burgin in a semifinal at Burgin.
Shewmaker struck out eight batters and walked only two for Mercer (27-7), which clinched a berth in next 12th Region Tournament and will play tonight’s East Jessamine-West Jessamine winner for the district title Wednesday.
Megan Osborne had a home run and a double for the Titans, who broke the game open with a 10-run second inning.
"It was no secret that we were the underdog going into this game. We just had to bring our best game and hope that Mercer County was looking ahead to the championship game,” Burgin interim coach Matt Grimes said. “I was very proud of the girls tonight. We didn't have the outcome we were looking for, but we kept our heads up and kept fighting until the end. All a coach can ask for is their best effort."
Sixth-grade pitcher Grace Osbourn gave up 14 hits and six walks and struck out one batter for Burgin (2-15).
