Clark's assistant superintendent plans to retire

May 22, 2012|By Bob Flynn | The Winchester Sun

Assistant Superintendent Pat Rosenthal has been a fixture in Clark County Public Schools for the past 25 years.

But when her colleagues begin preparing for the upcoming school year later this summer, Rosenthal will be kicked back and enjoying the beginning of her retirement.

Rosenthal announced May 18 that she would be retiring effective June 30. The decision, she said, was something she had been thinking about for the last couple of months.

“I had been thinking about it and decided about a month ago that the time was right,” Rosenthal said. “I really enjoy what I do, but I want to have more time to do some of the things I’ve been wanting to do but just didn’t have time to do, like traveling. This will open time for me to get out and enjoy those things.”

Rosenthal spent the first seven years of her career teaching English at George Rogers Clark High School and Clark Middle School before moving to the central office as director of curriculum, where she worked closely with teachers in the classrooms providing the support they needed from central office.

The friendships she has developed within the schools in that capacity will be what she will miss most, Rosenthal said.

“The hardest part about the whole decision is that I hate to leave everybody. The relationships I’ve built over 18 years, it’s like leaving family behind,” Rosenthal said. “The principals have been so great about opening their schools to me, and I’ll miss the teachers. But I’ll miss the kids the most. I love going into the classrooms and working with the kids. You touch the lives of these kids and they really appreciate what you do for them.”

Superintendent Elaine Farris said Rosenthal would be missed across the district.

“Pat has been at central office 17 of her 25 years of service with the Clark County Public Schools. She’s been a pillar in this district,” Farris said. “She will certainly be missed and her shoes will be hard to fill.”
