Boyle County unveils two new mobile recycling units

Donna Fechter has a new way to positively impact the environment.

Boyle County’s solid waste director proudly unveiled two new mobile recycling units Wednesday that will be used to accept and transport cardboard, bottles and cans from festivals and events.

The $18,500 cost of the brightly decorated units was covered by a grant from the Kentucky Division of Waste Management awarded to Boyle Fiscal Court.

“We wrote the grant for the fiscal year and bought them three months ago, but we waited to have them delivered until it was warm enough to apply the design,” said Fechter.

Eben and Janet Henson of City Art Signs transformed the plain units according to Fechter’s description of what she wanted them to say — and to mean.

“Donna came in and told us what she had and what she wanted, and we took her ideas and added the ‘wow!’ factor,” Janet Henson said.

What Fechter wanted was something “kid” accessible, so even little ones can look and immediately understand that the units are about nature and animals, blue sky and water.

“Recycling impacts the air and land and water, so all of those things are part of the design,” Fechter said.

The words “Recycle Boyle County, It’s the Future” for those who can read should make the message clear. Fechter, who has been with the agency since 1991, said the people of Boyle County are willing to do their part.

“I¿have never had any resistance to recycling, only fiscal challenges,” she said.

Expect to see one of the units at events around Centre College and the other wherever people in town gather for a festival, fair or other event.

“Call me if you are having a big function, say, at the fairgrounds,” she said. “I will bring one to you.”
