Police arrested a Winchester man for assault after he admitted to wounding a friend by mistake during an argument Saturday morning.

Keithyon Nelson, 20, of 36 Fitch Ave., pleaded not guilty to first-degree assault and tampering with physical evidence charges Monday in Clark District Court.

Police said Nelson, the 17-year-old victim and others got into an argument Saturday near 8 Wainscott Ave.

Neighbors reported hearing shots being fired in the neighborhood.

Officers were notified by employees at Clark Regional Medical Center of a juvenile patient with a gunshot wound to his leg, Winchester Police Sgt. Tom Beall said. The juvenile was treated and released, he said, and the investigation led officers back to 8 Wainscott Ave., where the altercation began.

“The two boys had been in a house on Wainscott and got into an argument with some boys in the apartment,” Beall said. The argument turned into a fight, he said, during which witnesses said Nelson fired several shots from a handgun. One of those struck the 17-year-old in the leg, he said. Beall said the juvenile and Nelson were friends.

Officers eventually located and interviewed Nelson, who admitted to firing the .25-caliber handgun, and then hiding it near Scobee Funeral Home. Beall said Nelson took officers to where he hid the gun.

Nelson is being held on a $20,000 cash bond in the Clark County Detention Center. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 30 in Clark District Court.
