The Danville-Boyle County Humane Society is joining with the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to celebrate National “Adopt a Shelter Cat”  Month during June.

According to Kathy Nelson, executive director of the humane society, eight million dogs and cats end up in shelters every year. Of these, only three out of every 10 cats leaves the shelter as a new part of a happy family.

DBCHS hopes to increase those odds locally by offering a special adoption fee of $25 on all cats one year old and older for the entire month.

An application is required with the fee, which includes spay/neuter surgery, vaccines, leukemia test and rabies shot.

Those who are unable to participate through adoption are invited to help prevent overpopulation by taking advantage of low-cost spay and neuter surgery is available for those with low incomes from Happy Paws Spay and Neuter Clinic. Call (859) 691-1137 to schedule an appointment.

The DBCHS is located at 778 North Danville Bypass. For more information call (859) 238-1117 or visit www.homes4pets.org.
