Local writer's essay published in collection

June 05, 2012|By Rachel Parsons Gilliam | The Winchester Sun

Janet Miracle’s recollections of caring for her father after a stroke that left him unable to speak are the basis of her recently published essay, “The Language of Silence.”

As a long-time member of the Clark County Writers Group, Miracle said her goal has always been to see her work published. Currently, she has two works on her resume, both from the popular “Chicken Soup for the Soul” series.

“The Language of Silence” was published in March in “Chicken Soup for the Soul: Family Caregivers.”

The story details Miracle’s efforts to communicate with her father when he lost the ability to speak, and had to move into a nursing home.

“It was perseverance, continuing to try with seemingly no results,” Miracle said.

Miracle was previously published in “Chicken Soup for the Soul: Christmas Treasury.” Her essay detailed waking up the morning before her school Christmas program in the 1950s and finding a new outfit her mother had sewn for her out of old clothing.

She shared the essay with fellow members of the Writers’ Group, and credits the club with helping her writing improve during the last seven years.

Miracle’s interest in writing began as a child, exchanging letters with her aunt in Michigan.

“That was so fascinating,” Miracle said.

As a former English teacher and school librarian, Miracle is an avid reader and said she tries to learn something about the craft of writing from her favorite magazines, like “Reminisce” and “Looking Back.”

The Clark County Writers’ Group meets at 6 p.m. the second Tuesday of every month at the Clark County Public Library. The club is open to anyone with an interest in writing.
