Hospital parking difficult for some

June 06, 2012

We are fortunate to have Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center in Danville, but they have given little consideration to access for the disabled and elderly who are unable to walk far distances to the hospital entrance.

There are long walks from the parking garage to the hospital. The walled area adjacent to the emergency room is downhill to the entrance and uphill to the parking area. That incline makes a big difference for those who have trouble breathing or need a cane to steady their walking. And that is if you are fortunate enough to find a parking space.

Third Street offers a few spaces to park but finding one of those open is a rarity.

I have heard many complaints from other friends and acquaintances.

We use canes and walkers and wheelchairs to maintain our independence but our hospital ironically makes it very difficult for us. We would like to visit our family and friends and take needed tests without such difficult barriers.

Recently, when I went for a test, my daughter dropped me off at the entrance and picked me up. Not everyone has that luxury.

We miss the valet service that was once provided. I, for one, would certainly be glad to pay for it, even though I understand not everyone can afford it.

I would like to encourage a wonderful hospital to address this glaring concern.
