The name of the 5-year-old boy who died Sunday of injuries received in a horseback riding accident at Eagles Nest Trail Farm in Mercer County has not yet been officially released.

“I think they still had some family to notify,” said Mercer County Deputy Sheriff Carol Matt Swaby.

Swaby said the boy reportedly was on a horse being led by his grandfather, Ricky Peyton of Harrodsburg, when the accident occurred.

“We got the call from dispatch at about 6:20,” Swaby said. “The call came in and said that they had been riding horses and the horse had stumbled and the boy had fallen off and the horse had rolled over on him.”

Swaby said the family called 911 on the way to the hospital with the boy.

“I met up with them, at Industry Road, along with EMS,” he said.

The boy was transferred to the care of EMS and rushed to Haggin Memorial Hospital where he died.

Carol Conover co-owns The Eagles Nest with her husband, Michael. This was the first tragedy, she said, on the 30 miles of tree-lined trails she and her husband have been putting together one parcel of land at a time since 1990.

With the exception of three horses she owns and sometimes lends out, all horses on the trails of the non-profit are trailered in by the families who ride them.

Conover said the boy had been riding a horse that belonged to the family. “The family are all really good riders,” she said.

“Ricky’s love and devotion to his boys is unlimited,” she said. “Our hearts go out to him and his family.”
