Justin Spicer gets 20 years for murder

June 15, 2012|By Fred Petke | The Winchester Sun

Justin Spicer officially began serving 20 years Thursday for killing a Clark County man last year over a gun dispute.
Spicer, 24, of 318 Carolina Ave., pleaded guilty last month in Clark Circuit Court for the May 1, 2011, death of 63-year-old Dallas Hall outside his home on Little Stoner Road.

Spicer made no statements before being sentenced Thursday afternoon. Clark Circuit Judge Jean Chenault Logue followed the terms of the plea agreement, which called for Spicer to serve 20 years for murder and 10 years for first-degree burglary. Those two prison terms will run concurrently, but consecutively with a one-year term for tampering with physical evidence, for a total of 21 years.

When Spicer pleaded guilty in May, he told Logue he got into an argument with Hall about firearms. The argument escalated and Spicer shot Hall with his own .380 handgun. Spicer said he then took other guns from Hall’s home and sold them.

Spicer was arrested several weeks after Hall’s death. Clark County Sheriff Berl Perdue Jr. said Spicer was an early suspect, after witnesses saw him at Hall’s home the day before the shooting. Deputies also located the missing firearms, which they traced back to Spicer, he said.

Hall’s son found the body when he went to check on his father. Deputies found five .380-caliber ammunition casings in the yard and a sixth on the porch.
