Danville High School principal search underway

The search for a 2012-13 Danville High School principal is well underway, though administrators will take applications for the vacant position until Wednesday.

So far, 12 people have applied for the position, said Danville Independent Schools Superintendent Carmen Coleman. Members of the Danville High school-based council interviewed four of those candidates and expect to conduct more interviews very soon.

On Thursday, Coleman and the school-based council will meet and review any new applications received. They will then decide who else to interview for the position.

The principal’s desk became vacant when Ed McKinney was promoted to work as director of pupil personnel in the school district’s central office. That position became open when veteran educator Chuck Stallard announced his retirement a few weeks ago.

The Danville High school-based council has set a long list of criteria which the next principal should meet, said David R. Davis, director of administrative services for the school district.

Some of the criteria are as follows:

Driven to build a highly successful school differentiated by high student performance, achievement and the overall efficiency of the system.
Values teachers as leaders.
Builds community and common goals through students, teachers, other staff and parents.
Competency in the business aspect of running a school.

The next Danville High School principal should also be humorous, confident, organized and realistic, according to the standards outlined by school-based council members.

“I'm looking for (a principal) who can jump right into the plans underway and work alongside the students and staff to continue the momentum,” Coleman said. “We don't have time to miss a beat!”
