Little League tourney coming to town

Youth softball teams from around the state will come to Winchester next month to compete in the Little League State Softball Tournament at Lykins Park.

The tournament will run from July 7 to 12, said Jennifer Miles, director of softball operations for the Winchester Little League Board, during a recent Winchester-Clark County Tourism Commission meeting.

“We believe based on the number of teams and people that’ll be here, we’ll be bringing in about 250 people from out of the area,” Miles said. “It’ll probably be overnight accommodations for the weekend.”

The first round of the tournament will be pool play, and then it will go into single elimination.

Winchester Little League Board Treasurer Charlie Eury said the event is similar to the Little League State Baseball Tournament that Winchester hosted in 2003.

“And there’s seven districts, I believe, throughout the state, they all send, of course, their winners to a state level competition, and that’s basically what it is,” he said. “It rotates around the state and it happens to be District 3’s turn.”

Miles said besides the out-of-town teams, three local teams will compete in the tournament, along with a team from Powell County.

The total cost to host the tournament will be about $4,000, Eury said. The Tourism Commission voted Tuesday to give the Little League Board $150 to help offset the costs of the kickoff cookout for the event on July 6. Other costs include paying the umpires for the event.

“So we need sponsors to help us with that,” said Tracy Bates, marketing director for the Little League Board.

Miles said the board is excited to host the tournament.

“We hope it will be good for the whole community,” she said.
