Joseph Lee Witt: June 18, 2012

June 21, 2012

Joseph Lee Witt, 67, of Winchester, shared his final days and moments at home, surrounded by his loving and devoted family, before succumbing to complications from terminal cancer at 11:35 p.m. on Monday, June 18, 2012.

Born Sept. 19, 1944, in Winchester, he was the only child of Joseph Eugene Witt, who died when Joe Lee was only 9 years old. His mother, Marie Tapp Witt, taught elementary school in Clark County for 43 years.

From a very young age, Joe accepted responsibility for the family home and farm on Irvine Road. Even through college, marriage and children of his own, he thoughtfully cared for his mother until her death in 1985 at age 73, always treasuring the special bond they had together.

After graduating from Eastern Kentucky University in 1971, Joe married Karen Henderson of Cincinnati on Feb. 23, 1973. The two met while at EKU and spent almost 40 years faithfully sharing their lives with one another.

His gentle, quiet spirit and compassion toward others was an example to many. Many wonderful relationships were formed with lifelong friends.

Survivors include his wife Karen Henderson Witt of Winchester, and three children: Joshua Lee Witt (Julie Lanier), Winchester; Michael Jennings Witt (Penny Smith),Washington, D.C.and Erin Elizabeth Ellen Witt, Winchester. Grandchildren include Cameron Scott, Avery Marie, Lauren Elizabeth, Harrison Grant, Corban David, Bristol Joseph, Clara Joy, Barrett Michael, Lincoln Christopher, Kendall Jennings and Noelle Grace, all of Winchester.
