111 receive GED through Jessamine adult education

It was not just the graduates who beamed with pride last Thursday at the Jessamine County Adult Education’s GED graduation, but also the many instructors, who in their own way, passed with flying colors.

“We reached 150 percent of the state-mandated GED graduation goal,” program director Janice Crane said. “This is just a wonderful testament of the incredible instruction that goes on at the adult-learning center.”

This year was the program’s highest percentage of student gains ever with a record number  of 111 of graduates and also a record number of students enrolled to one day earn their GED, Crane said.
“We have so much to celebrate tonight,” she said.

The adult-learning center had a 90-percent passing rate for 2012 with 88 of the graduates scoring over 2,500 points.

The minimum cumulative score is set at 2,250 total to receive a GED in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
“What’s extra special is that 53 of our GED graduates had a combined score of over 2,700,” Cranes said. “And what’s even more special than that is 16 graduates with scores over 3,000.”

Crane said some graduates scored more than 2,700 last year but not as many as this year.

“I know I say this every year, but this truly gets better and better,” Jessamine County superintendent Lu Young said to the crowd of graduates who were there with friends and family in the East Jessamine High School auditorium.

It was a much-needed boost in morale for the adult-education program to have such a high passing rate and excellent scores, Crane said, because it was a tough year financially for the center.

After the graduation ceremony, two more awards were handed out to two students who succeeded even further than the “best graduating class” the adult-learning program has ever seen. Graduates Zach Mitchell and Cassandra Leslie each had the highest cumulative score of the 2012 class and received a special plaque along with their certificate of completion.
