Vacation Bible School

Day of Prayer

St. Catharine Motherhouse — The monthly Contemplative Prayer Day will be 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 14. The day includes multiple sessions of centering-contemplative prayer with meditative walks, silence, personal prayer and a presentation titled “Sacred Dialogue: Prayer Conversations With God Through The Language of Nature,” presented by Dr. Don Giles, professor of philosophy and religion at St. Catharine College. It will include sharing about the day and a blessing. Bring a bagged lunch. A¿donation will be accepted. St. Catharine Motherhouse is two miles west of Springfield. Special services

Allen Chapel AME Church, Moreland — Sunday, the church will observe Pastor’s Appreciation Day. The 11 a.m. speaker will be the Rev. Sherry Green of Craig Chapel AME Church, Salvisa.

St. Paul Predestinarian Baptist Church — Sunday, the church will celebrate Rally Day. At 3:30 p.m. Sunday, the guest speaker will be the Rev. Virgil Hill and congregation of First Baptist Church, Harrodsburg. Dinner will be served after the morning service. The church is at 406 S. Campbell¿St., Lancaster.

Basketball tournament

Tip-off begins at 6 p.m. today for the first St. James AME Church Men’s Fellowship Summer Basketball Classic. The event will take place at Batewood Housing and Authority Park, which was remodeled last year and beautified by Centre College and the city of Danville. A walking park, childrens swings and gazebos were added. A new basketball court was built after the last one was destroyed by parking damage.

According to the Rev. William Jenkins, this is the first time the church has had a tournament in about 15 years, and the event is being held to bring people back into the park.

“I¿want to express gratitude to the city for the work they’ve done, and Centre”¿he said. “I don’t think anyone has ever said thank you.”

Teams have come from all over central Kentucky, including Danville, Frankfort, Richmond and Lebanon to participate.
