From the Farm: Heat doesn¿t deter farmers market-goers

July 11, 2012|By Donna Bush, contributing writer

At 8 a.m. Thursday, extra Senior Vouchers will be distributed on a first-come-first-served basis. Interested persons should bring proof of income.

Free blood pressure screenings will be provided as well. Location will be at the pavilion next to the market.

The Boyle County Farmers’ Market now can accept Senior Vouchers. Look for signs at approved booths, if you would like to use your vouchers to purchase fresh products.

Wow — 104 degrees plus! That was the temperature on Saturday at the market.

We were amazed that so many people still came out to shop with us. We can’t thank you enough.

Stop by our booths on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays to check out all the great things our farmers market has to offer. We have a bigger variety of vegetables and fruits every day now.

Look for these goodies in the coming week:

Vegetables and fruits: blackberries; cantaloupe; corn; cucumbers; eggplant; fresh herbs; green beans — roma, tenderette and jade; shiitake mushrooms; green onions; peaches; potatoes; raspberries; summer squash — yellow, patty pan and zucchini; tomatoes; and watermelons.

Baked goods: fried apple pies; friendship breads; granola; sourdough breads; butter biscuit rolls (Thursdays only); and wheat and honey wheat breads. Note: Briar Knob Farm takes orders for its specialty breads and rolls. Just let Monareia Wyatt know what you need ahead of time. She will deliver to the market.

Canned goods: jams and jellies; bread-and-butter pickles; and pickled beets.

Meats: pork chops; pork ribs; and pork sausage — extra sage and hot available.

Other goodies: fresh eggs; homemade dog treats; and Farmers Market cookbooks.

At Bush Farms: Sunday night, we finally had some rain! About .75 inches was showing in the rain gauge. We need a lot more but it was so welcome.

We have lost some young trees and bushes. The blackberry bushes in one area are barely hanging on.

Bushes that were loaded with fruit earlier have shriveled and some apples have dropped from their trees. This has been a very strange growing season so far.

Our crops still are doing OK. Barrie is working diligently to keep water on everything. He literally has run miles of irrigation drip tape.

This intense heat wave we are experiencing affects blossom set on many vegetable plants. Plants don’t set fruit when the temperatures are too high.

Our tomato plants look great but they have been slow to set new blossoms. Hopefully, cooler weather is coming soon.

Tomatoes have been available at the farmers’ market for the past few weeks. Fresh basil is also plentiful now.

One perfect party appetizer is Caprese which uses these two ingredients in an easy, delicious and beautiful dish.

Caprese

 4 vine-ripe tomatoes

1 pound mozzarella cheese

Fresh basil leaves

Extra-virgin olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Slice tomatoes and mozzarella cheese in ¼-inch-thick slices.

Layer alternating slices of tomatoes, cheese and basil leaves.

Drizzle with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper.

Note: For a zestier flavor, drizzle with Italian dressing.

EBT and debit services will continue to be available. We also accept WIC vouchers.
