Alpha Delta Kappa, an international organization for educators, had a dinner meeting Monday, Oct. 11 at 6 p.m. at Garden Girls’ Cafe. President Donna Hewson called the meeting to order. Hewson presented the devotion and gave the blessing. She also presented additional updates for the chapter yearbooks. Jo Gravett presented the altruism report. She encouraged members to keep faithful records of their many acts of helping others. Judi Stone handed out copies of the minutes.

The February Meeting of the Alpha Alpha chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa was held at Shearer School Library on Feb. 9. During this working meeting, members prepared 137 goody bags. Each bag contained an apple, orange, banana, chips, dessert treat, cheese and crackers, a handful of candy and a valentine. These bags were given with love to the 120 residents of the Winchester Centre for Health and Rehabilitation and the 17 residents of the Senior Care Unit of Clark Regional Medical Center.

A program of latest fashions and ideas for updating the wardrobe was presented at the May 14 meeting of Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa. The program was presented by Sandy Hicks, store manager of Dillard's at Lexington's Fayette Mall. The meeting was at the Clark County Public Library with Harriet Conner, president, conducting the business session. The devotional and invocation were given by Amy Handshoe, who also introduced the guests: Danielle Keeton, Angela Taulbee and Ann Hall.

Entertainment by the Journeymen Quarter highlighted the Dec. 11 meeting of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa held at the Clark County Public Library. The quarter is composed of Bob Cowen, Miller Gaunce, Jim Cowan and Mike Sheffield. The group performed several musical selections accompanied by Betty Cowen, pianist. The devotional and prayer were given by Amy Handshoe, chaplain, and reports were given by Ann Hampton, Jo Gravett and Lucille Creech. Carol Ann Oliver, treasurer, introduced and presented a check to the chapter's scholarship recipient, Jennifer Felts, an elementary education major at the University of Kentucky.

The Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met Monday, April 9, at the Clark County Extension Office.Harriet Conner, president, conducted the business meeting. The devotional and prayer were given by Amy Handshoe, chaplain. Members heard reports submitted from Ann Hampton, Carol Anne Oliver and Joe Gravett. It was announced that Cardinal Hill was the group's altruistic recipient for the month. It was also announced that the May meeting will be held at the Clark County Public Library.

Dear Editor, The month of October has been designated International Alpha Delta Kappa month. Alpha Delta Kappa, or ADK, is an international honorary society for women educators. There are more than 44,000 ADK members in more than 1,600 chapters throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Australia, Canada, Jamaica and Mexico. The Alpha Delta Kappa chapter here in Danville is the Sigma Chapter. There are 44 educators, both working and retired, from Boyle County, Mercer County, Garrard County, Kentucky School for the Deaf, Danville Christian Academy, Burgin and the Danville schools who belong to the Sigma Chapter.

The Alpha Alpha chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met Dec. 8 at Central Baptist Church. Amy Handshoe read the poem, "Santa's Secret. " Christmas is about giving, not just of toys, but of our love because sometimes what people need most is a hug, a kind word, or a listening ear. After the blessing, everyone enjoyed a potluck buffet. Following the dinner, the group was entertained by Trish Torline, Conkwright band teacher. She opened with "What Child Is This" and followed with secular and sacred songs.

The Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa held its first meeting of the 2007-08 year on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at Hall's on the River. Members prepared notes welcoming new teachers to the Clark County school system and a gift certificate from Wal-Mart was placed in each card. Harriet Conner presided during the business meeting. Roll call was taken and the secretary's report was given by Ann Hampton, secretary. The treasurer's report was submitted by Carl Anne Oliver. Members received a packet of chapter information for the upcoming year.

Dana Skinner Stefanick was guest speaker for the Sept. 10 meeting of Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa held at the Clark County Extension Office. Mrs. Stefanick is coordinator of grants and special events at Cardinal Hill. She told of various programs offered at the Lexington facility. Harriet Conner, president, conducted the meeting and Danielle Keeton was introduced as a new member. The devotional and prayer were given by Amy Handshoe and various reports were given by Ann Hampton, Carol Anne Oliver, Jo Gravett and Lucille Creech.

The Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13 at the Clark County Extension Office. Harriet Conner, president, conducted the meeting. The devotion and prayer were given by Amy Handshoe, chaplain. Alva Clark introduced guest speaker Jenny Noble, owner of Noble's Ole Town Gifts. Mrs. Noble enlightened members as to how her business began and shared items from her store. Roll was taken, and minutes of the previous meeting were ready by Ann Hampton, secretary.

Before the business meeting, the members recognized the chapter’s scholarship recipients, Alyson and Caitlyn Vincent. Alyson and Caitlyn are juniors majoring in elementary education at Transylvania University. They also provided the program by performing three clogging routines. President Donna Hewson conducted the business meeting. She opened the meeting with prayer.

Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary organization for women educators, met Monday, Feb. 14 at 4 p.m. at Central Baptist Church. President Donna Hewson presided over an abbreviated business meeting. Secretary Judi Stone presented the minutes. Treasurer Carol Anne Oliver gave the treasurer’s report. The focus of the meeting was altruism. Jo Gravett, altruistic chairperson, reminded members that last year’s total service numbers were a total of 3,192 hours and $23,118 for donations.

The Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met at Garden Girls' Cafe on Nov. 9. Donna Hewson, vice president, called the meeting to order at 6:15 p.m. Carol Anne Oliver introduced the guest speaker, Betty Berryman. Berryman, who had her first paper route at age 3, is a former publisher of The Winchester Sun. After retiring, she found she was bored and took a job with the Education Foundation. She is currently heading up Partners in Education for the Clark County School System, a program where volunteers go into the schools and mentor children.

The Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met at Carol Anne Oliver's home on Oct. 12. President Ruth Anne Moore called the meeting to order by welcoming all the guests who had joined Alpha Alpha for Founder's Day. Nancy Hanna gave the devotional about Pumpkin, a square pumpkin who blocked the hole in the fence and saved his round pumpkin friends. Because he was different, the other pumpkins made fun of him. One day there was a storm and the fence broke. The round pumpkins began rolling toward the hole beyond which lay the rocks and river.

The Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa met at Garden Girls' Cafe on Sept. 14. President Ruth Anne Moore called the meeting to order. Chaplain Amy Handshoe gave a devotional based on Matt 11:28, "I Will Give You Rest. " After prayer for discernment in knowing when to let go and rest, Amy gave each member a pedicure kit, encouraging everyone to take a rest and pamper themselves. Alpha Alpha sisters then greeted an old friend and former teacher, Elaine Farris, as the new superintendent of Clark County Schools.

The April "Girls' Night Out" meeting of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa was held at Barton's Restaurant on April 13. The business meeting was conducted by President Ruth Anne Moore. Jo Gravett gave a mini "how-to" seminar on recording the group's altruism, and handed out two types of forms for record keeping. "Unselfish concern for the welfare of others" is the guideline for determining what can or cannot be included on the forms. Monetary or other gifts to schools, hospitals and nursing homes, as well as volunteers hours, are to be included on the altruism forms.
