Ambulances will staff football games at George Rogers Clark High School, but may not be available for other athletic events under a deal reached by city and school officials this week. The staffing issue emerged in July, when Winchester Fire-EMS Chief Danny Castle reported that a recent surge in emergency calls has decreased the availability of on-duty crews to remain on standby at school sporting events. Instead, the department must call in personnel on overtime. Castle estimated that staffing the games costs about $120 per hour ?

Two children who were restrained by the same seat belt suffered head injuries Tuesday in a two-car accident in front of Wendy's restaurant on U.S. Hwy 27 in Stanford. Gracie Crawley of Lancaster was driving a white Geo Prizm south when she collided with a Mustang driven by Phil Taylor, who was attempting to turn onto 27 from the Walmart parking lot. Taylor, who was wearing a seat belt, was uninjured. Crawley and her two grandchildren were transported by ambulance to Fort Logan Hospital.

LANCASTER - A Garrard County ambulance was struck Thursday morning while on an emergency run when a vehicle it was attempting to pass turned in front of it. Kentucky State Police report the crash occurred at 10 a.m. on Ky. 52 about two miles east of Lancaster. The ambulance driven by EMT Leslie Kirby, 26, was traveling east with its lights and sirens activated. According to the report, Janel Harris, 37, of Lancaster did not see or hear the ambulance coming up behind her. As the ambulance traveled into the left lane to pass Harris, she attempted to turn left onto Old Ky. 52. The ambulance struck the driver's side of Harris' 1994 Mazda pickup truck.

City and county firefighters had to use ropes and a Stokes basket to rescue a teenager who was injured in an accident while swimming late Friday afternoon with some friends at the Kentucky River near Hall's. According to Battalion Chief William Puckett of the Clark County Fire Department, the youths were using a tire-and-rope swing to splash into the water, and Melanie Allshire, 16, of Richmond, didn't let go soon enough and landed on some rocks. When rescue workers arrived, she was unconscious, but she was smiling and talking with her parents when she was placed in an ambulance.

Boyle County EMS came before Boyle County Fiscal Court on Tuesday. On Aug. 4, an ambulance was involved in a wreck that caused significant damage to the vehicle. The cost to repair the ambulance will be about $85,000. Boyle County Treasurer Mary Lynn said the repairs would have to be paid out of the EMS fund, but it would be reimbursed soon after. The EMS insurance on the ambulance has a $10,000 deductible. Deputy Director of EMS Operations Malcolm Miller said James Lane was driving when the accident occurred.

A two-car collision at the intersection of Maple Leaf Lane and Maple Street sent four people to the hospital at 5 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, including a 3-year-old boy who was thrown from one of the vehicles. The driver of a black Buick Regal was headed outbound on Maple Street when it struck a black Chevy Blazer that was turning out of the intersection. The Blazer overturned, and the boy was ejected from the vehicle. He was treated for a head injury and severe lacerations and was taken by ambulance to the University of Kentucky Hospital along with the driver of the SUV. The driver and passenger of the Regal were treated for minor injuries and were also taken by ambulance.

Clark County firefighters and Winchester Fire-EMS move a patient to a waiting ambulance after two pickup trucks collided head on just outside the city limits on Two Mile Road. Two victims were transported to Clark Regional Medical Center for treatment. The wreck happened shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday. Further information was not available at press time.

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center announces that the ambulance entrance to the emergency department now has restricted access. Generally, patients not transported by ambulance and visitors will no longer be able to enter the emergency department through those sliding doors, but instead may use the adjacent outpatient entrance. "We are implementing restricted access to the ambulance entrance as a safety and security measure not only for our employees but also for our patients," said Harry Nickens, spokesperson for Ephraim McDowell Health.
