LIBERTY - The leader of a newly formed organization says Casey County is in violation of state laws pertaining to the care of cats and dogs and has offered his group's assistance in getting an animal shelter. Kirk Kelly, executive director of Casey Animal Rescue Enforcement, came before City Council on Wednesday and plans to be at the Monday session of Casey Fiscal Court seeking support for an animal shelter and enforcement of current state laws pertaining to the care of domestic animals.

After hearing a proposal by The Jessamine County S.A.V.E. Center for Homeless Animals, the fiscal court agreed to bid out the contract for operating the county's animal shelter. Jenise Smith, director of S.A.V.E., spoke to the magistrates for about 20 minutes during Tuesday's fiscal court meeting, outlining the group's current concerns and future plans for operating the facility. "Our proposal is to take over the shelter," Smith said. "We have a different way of doing things.

STANFORD - Since Lincoln County opened its new animal shelter in February, it has taken in more than 700 dogs. In that same period, volunteer Jenise Smith has used the Internet to help find a home for more than 300 of them. If the success story is going to continue at that pace, someone is going to have to step up and replace Smith, of Nicholasville, who is leaving the Lincoln shelter Saturday to take over as director of the shelter in Jessamine County. "This will be a full-time position, and with that and my family obligations I will not have the time to continue helping Lincoln County," Smith said in an e-mail.

The Danville-Boyle County Humane Society animal shelter will close at 1 p.m. Saturday while Constitution Square Festival is in progress. Pet lovers are encouraged to visit the DBCHS booth at the festival, where pet gift baskets and T-shirts will be for sale. Pens of puppies also will be part of the DBCHS booth both Saturday and Sunday. On Sept. 23, the animal shelter, located on the Danville bypass beside the fairgrounds, will resume its normal Saturday hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call (859)

The Boyle County Courthouse will be closed today for the Fourth of July holiday. Public works and the animal shelter also will be closed today. The recycling center and convenience center will be open today, but closed Saturday.

The Advocate-Messenger will not publish a newspaper Monday, and the office will be closed in observance of the Fourth of July holiday. Also, the Boyle County Courthouse will be closed Monday along with public works, the animal shelter, recycling center and all convenience centers.

Morris may not be a purebred black Labrador retriever, but he's pretty close. He is one of 6 black Lab puppies available for adoption this week from the Danville-Boyle County Humane Society animal shelter. There are many other puppies available for adoption, including beagle mix and border collie mix. Dogs include a beautiful male German shepherd and a yellow Lab mix named Blondie. There are also several cats and kittens. The animal shelter, located on the bypass beside the fairgrounds, is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
