Last week, Apple launched the newest line of their MacBook Air computers. The launch makes me chuckle inside when I think back to the launch of netbooks. Apple spent most of the time bashing the netbook form factor when it stole headlines and the computer market nearly three years ago. Now, along comes Apple rolling in with their new MacBook Air line. They simply appear to be the Mac version of a high-end netbook. Sure, the new MacBook Air looks fancy, it has slightly better hardware and of course, Apple’s lofty pricetag, too. Yet, when it all boils down to it, it’s basically a glorified netbook.

An apple tree usually is one of the first fruit crops backyard fruit growers think about planting in their yard. However, they are one of the more difficult fruit crops to grow, primarily because of the wide range of pests that like them. One of the more difficult diseases for home fruit growers to combat is apple scab. This is a fungus that causes lesions on the fruit and can also defoliate the tree and kill the spurs - the structures that produce the flower buds. Several other diseases Kentucky fruit growers must contend with are fire blight, cedar apple rust and powdery mildew.

"I don't care what Donny Osmond says, one bad apple will spoil the whole bunch. " This statement was made by my sixth-grade teacher, Miss Joan Davis; a wonderful, funny lady whose gentle nature, deep faith and just all around good sense has enriched my life more than I'll ever be able to tell her. Whatever infraction of whichever school rule prompted that declaration, she was concerned that it would be repeated by other students. She sought to avoid the domino effect of bad behavior on our class, but as with so many other things she has taught me over the years, this particular lesson transcends the boundaries of the classroom.

This week, I will be answering a couple questions from the mailbag. . Wendy E. writes in regard to the Craig wireless tablet at CVS: “Could you please tell me if this is what I want? All I am looking for is a way to electronically store my recipes so they are easy to find.” Answer: Well, it’s hard to determine. I doubt that you would want to type up a recipe using an onscreen keyboard. If you have the recipes already in digital format and just want to view them on something portable, the tablet may work for you. Basically, you would put the files on a microSD card and insert the media card into the tablet then view the recipes on the tablet.

Dear Editor, As a diabetic, I eagerly read the Sunday Kentucky Advocate article by Elizabeth Shelton, "Nutritional tips for individuals with diabetes. " To me, some of her statements were at the least surprising. She failed to emphasize counting carbohydrates, reading every label for hidden carbs, and she made no reference to serving size and the role of exercise and activity. And what about fiber? Personally, I could never tolerate "6-11 servings each day of grains and starches.

This past week I went to Louisville to see my daughter after her eye surgery. Hopefully, the doctors were able to get the cancer from the spot on her eye, but another suspicious spot on the same eye was discovered. She is awaiting the results of that biopsy to see if another surgery is in the future.  After a few weeks, the bruises from the surgery should go away, and hopefully everything will be good for her.  Later in the week I went to Bramble Ridge Orchard to surprise a friend who was there with her church group on her birthday.

This popular saying has had generations gobbling up apples one day at a time and for good reason too! Apples have been found throughout most of history, dating back more than 4,000 years. Today, over 7,000 varieties of apples are grown world-wide, with only about 100 varieties produced commercially in the Untied States. Apples are a fat free, sodium free, and cholesterol free food. They are rich in fiber and pectin, which has been proven to reduce cholesterol, aid in digestion, as well as help diabetics regulate their blood sugar.

In just over three weeks, residents of Jessamine County will head to the polls to cast their ballots in the general election. Beginning with the 2006 general election, The Jessamine Journal has held candidate forums in which the candidates fielded questions in a public setting. The economy and lack of resources to adequately coordinate and control those settings have prompted The Journal to go a different direction in 2010. The paper has selected six races and invited candidates to attend for a question-and-answer session that will be videotaped and put on the paper’s website.

About 300 people pressed against corral panels to await a hunk of the big cookie, served up by employees of the IGA grocery store. A crowd gathered across the street at the Village Green, too, to watch performances by local church groups. The midway also opened Wednesday evening.
