For the third year in a row, my retired Navy fiancé and I (an Army veteran) enjoyed the wonderful Veteran's Day free meal that Applebee's so graciously offers all Armed Forces vets and active duty personnel. The meal was delicious, the atmosphere was crowded with old and young military people - some in their uniforms, dressed from camouflage fatigues to full dress mess uniforms complete with bow tie. It was great to hear all the military people reminiscing about their military service, about friends sadly lost, about friends gratefully reunited.

An eyewitness to the incident, who did not want to give his name, said he saw the driver flee before the car was "cut off" by police cars "at the top of the hill" near the traffic light on Lexington Avenue.

Dear Editor: During my usual and customary hour and a half wait to be seated at Applebee's on Friday, I couldn't help but wonder: Where are the restaurants? Where's the Red Lobster and O'Charley's we were promised when we voted for liquor-by-the-drink? Where's the Ruby Tuesday's, Rafferty's, or Tony Roma's that were waiting in the wings once Danville went moist? Since that vote, Danville has a remodeled Long John Silvers and Arby's, has a future Captain D's and now a Huddle House, none of which serve alcohol.

LIBERTY ? In Stanford, the business owners behind the petition that calls for a referendum on alcohol sales have chosen to remain anonymous so as not to alienate any potential customers who might take a hard line against drinking. In Liberty, Ronnie Davis is going a different route. He's put his intention to make the town moist on full public display, boldly announcing it on a sign adorned with American flags at a prominent intersection on U.S. 127 where he wants to develop a 100-seat restaurant, bar and grill.
