The Lady Patriot basketball team may not have been in class over the holiday break, but that did not mean any break for the team. With an invitation extended from Boyle County High School for the Applebee's Winter Classic, Lincoln County's girls' varsity team was booked. The Lady Patriots opened play with Washington County on Wednesday, Dec. 27, and followed with three more games through Saturday. It would be a victorious start to the holiday for the Lady Patriots as Lincoln beat Washington County 37-27 in the opening game of the tournament at Boyle County High.

A .500 record may not be that glamorous, but it looks pretty good to the Lincoln County girls right now. It was a struggle to get there, but the Lady Patriots are all even after five weeks and 14 games. They got there by beating Raceland 50-48 in overtime Saturday for fifth place in the Applebee's Winter Classic to cap a 3-1 run in the Boyle County tournament. Shakelia Miller hit two free throws with 4.4 seconds left for the winning margin after Lincoln (7-7) rallied from a 12-point deficit in the first quarter and came from behind again in the fourth.

Boyle County stayed close in the first half before Mason County pulled away in the second for a 75-53 win in the seventh-place game at the Applebee's Winter Classic. "They're a good team, and it just caught up with us in the third quarter," Boyle coach Judie Mason said. "When you play five kids for four days in a row, that's going to happen. What becomes of the Boyle County girls over the balance of this week remains to be seen, but they began their holiday tournament the same way they always do. The Lady Rebels are 3-for-3 in the first round of the Applebee's Winter Classic after a 77-34 rout of Caverna in their first-round game Wednesday night. It was as easy as it seemed - by far the home team's largest win in the short history of this tournament - and they hope it was the start of a good week. "I thought it was good preparation for us for the next three days," Boyle coach Judie Mason said.
