LIBERTY - A woman was indicted Friday for allegedly for inducing, assisting or causing a 14-year-old to engage in the use of marijuana, according to records in Casey Circuit Clerk Craig Overstreet's office. Anita M. Edwards, 37, is accused of assisting the juvenile in the use of marijuana, possession of open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle and driving a under the influence of alcohol/drugs. She is scheduled to be arraigned 1 p.m. Jan. 8. Trooper Martin Wesley was the grand jury witness.

The Salvisa man charged after the boat he was piloting July 2 collided with a jet ski on Herrington Lake had his arraignment continued today in Boyle District Court. Sammy Jason Hackler, 39, of 475 Goodlett Road is to appear in court Aug. 10. He is charged with second-degree assault, driving under the influence of intoxicants, and three counts of wanton endangerment. The driver of the jet ski, Alex Otte, 13, of Danville, suffered severe leg injuries in the accident. She is no longer a patient at the University of Kentucky hospital.

Thomas Hager Jr. was arraigned Tuesday in Boyle Circuit Court, where he was assigned two public defenders and pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder in the May shooting deaths of two men inside a Danville home. Judge Darren Peckler ordered Hager to continue to be held without bond and scheduled a status hearing in the case for Aug. 7.  Assigned to defend Hager in what could be a death-penalty case were Aaron Currin with the Capital Trials Branch of the Lexington Public Defender's Office and Ernie Lewis, former executive director of the state Department of Public Advocacy.

Arraignment for Danville school board members Julie Erwin and Lonnie Harp has been continued until Nov. 17 in Boyle District Court. An associate with Erwin and Harp's lawyers said the continuance was agreed upon by both sides. The attorney general's office filed criminal complaints against Erwin and Harp on Sept. 18, alleging they violated election law by soliciting help from school employees in their campaigns to be elected to the Danville school board. Erwin and Harp admit they sent a campaign e-mail, which is the basis of the complaints, to a list-serve that 20 teachers were subscribed to. The e-mail announced their candidacy and asked for support in their campaigns.

A Danville man accused of attacking police during an arrest but who alleges four Danville officers beat him had his arraignment postponed Tuesday in Boyle County District Court after his lawyer abruptly resigned from the case. Robbie Houston, 43, was scheduled to be arraigned on four felony counts of assaulting a police officer, along with misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest, disorderly conduct and criminal mischief. STANFORD - Constant surveillance and a lot of "footwork" by Kentucky State Police detectives helped lead to the arrest Sunday of a male suspect in the double homicide of two young Lincoln County men six years ago, a state police spokesman said Monday. And Trooper Chris Lanham, public information officer for the Richmond post, told a noon press conference on the steps of the Lincoln County Courthouse he is optimistic that the still ongoing investigation will result in the apprehension of additional suspects in the Feb. 1, 2002, murders of Ryan Keith Shangraw, 20, and Harold "Bo" Upton III, 18, in Shangraw's trailer in Hubble.

IndictmentsJohn Blanton, 55, was indicted in Clark Circuit Court on Nov. 27 with three counts of second-degree sexual abuse, three counts of second-degree sodomy, and one count of second-degree rape, after alleged contact involving a 13-year-old girl. According to the indictment, Blanton had contact with the girl in late September and early October. His arraignment is scheduled for Dec. 21 at 1:30 p.m. The following indictments were filed in Clark Circuit Court on Nov. 27: Brock Keel, 26, with first-degree promoting contraband, public intoxication and third-degree trafficking of a controlled substance on Oct. 5. An arraignment is scheduled for Dec. 7 at 10:15 a.m. Dorothy Reed, 35, with second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument on July 25. STANFORD - A Lincoln County grand jury recently indicted 31 people: Elmer D. Miller, 46, of 2197 Boneyville Road, Stanford, charged with criminal attempt to first-degree unlawful transaction with a minor under 16. He is accused of attempting to induce the minor to engage in illegal sexual activity from Sept. 19 through Oct. 10. Bond was set at $25,000 cash or property with no unsupervised contact with minors. Arraignment is set for Nov. 23. State police Detective Bill Collins was the grand jury witness.

When Boyle District Court bailiff Tim Bryant announced that everyone should stand when Judge Jeff Dotson entered the courtroom Wednesday, the candy-striped inmates immediately rose to their feet, as did the officers of the court and the folks seated in the gallery. Eugene Shirley Coffman and his brother James Wesley Coffman did not. Noticing what was going on around him, Eugene Coffman slowly followed suit, but James Wesley Coffman remained seated as Dotson made his way to the bench.

The man accused of shooting two men to death and seriously wounding another Monday in Danville pleaded not guilty to the charges Wednesday.  Appearing in Boyle District Court before Judge Jeff Dotson, Thomas Wayne Hager Jr. entered a plea of not guilty to two counts of murder and one count each of attempted murder and tampering with physical evidence. Hager will be held without bond at the Boyle County Detention Center until he appears in court again May 30 for a preliminary hearing.

Monday, Troy Hafley, 37, of Hustonville, was arraigned before Judge Bill Oliver in District Court on charges of wanton endangerment and unsworn falsifications to authorities stemming from a Jan. 14 fire at his flower shop. Hafley was charged with eleven separate counts of first degree wanton endangerment, one each for every fire fighter that responded to the late afternoon blaze at the Hustonville flower and gift shop and one count for endangering the life of a woman who lives next door.

A former employee of the Jessamine County Detention Center has been charged with stealing money belonging to the detention center and forging notices of jail credit. Brian Shearer, 35, 105 1/2 Cottage St., was indicted by a Jessamine County grand jury in December on 20 charges of theft by unlawful taking, value less than $500; four counts of theft by unlawful taking, value more than $500; and 15 counts of second-degree forgery, according to documents filed Dec. 9 in the Jessamine Circuit Clerk office.

Three Danville residents charged in connection with the death of a 27-year-old Richmond man found dead on the side of a Boyle County road were arraigned Tuesday in Boyle Circuit Court. Jordan Montez White, 24, of 418 Adams St., is charged with reckless homicide and tampering with physical evidence in the death of Michael Dean Begley Jr. Begley's girlfriend, Gina Priest, 41, and Melissa Jean Luna, 28, both of 103 Aldridge Lane, are charged with tampering with physical evidence. All three, in shackles and clad in red-striped jail jumpsuits, entered pleas of not guilty before Circuit Judge Darren Peckler.

HARRODSBURG — A Harrodsburg police officer indicted on 146 counts related to an alleged three-year sexual relationship with a juvenile pleaded not guilty to the charges Tuesday in Mercer Circuit Court. Jason Elder, 31, entered the not guilty plea in his first appearance before Judge Darren Peckler, who set a $10,000 bond releasing Elder on his own recognizance and prohibiting him from any contact with the girl or her family. “We’re glad he set a bond,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Tim Cocanougher of Springfield, who was assigned as special prosecutor for the case.

Hagan Folger, 24, son of Sheriff Curt Folger was arraigned Thursday in Lincoln County District Court on charges of theft by unlawful taking. Hagan Folger was arrested on 16 May on charges that on May 6 he stole property, valued at less than $500. The sheriff said that his son was stealing tools from him and pawning them to pay for prescription drugs to which he was addicted. “It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” the sheriff said. Folger was released on a GPS monitor but subsequently violated the terms of the agreement and was returned to jail.

A Winchester man charged with stabbing another during a fight entered his not guilty plea to assault charges. Daniel Santiago, 24, was arrested for first-degree assault in the early morning hours Sunday after police responded to a report of a fight in an alley near Hill Street. When officers reached the scene, they saw a vehicle leaving. When officers stopped the vehicle, they found the victim from the incident in the car. While EMTs were treating the victim, Angel Lopez, officers followed a trail of blood from the scene of the fight to 352 Hill St., where they found Santiago covered in blood and lying on a mattress, according to court documents.

The three people charged in the death of a 10-month-old girl in October were silent during their first court appearance Wednesday. The child’s grandmother, 51-year-old Cheryl Kirkwood-Black, and the stepgrandfather, 42-year-old David Black, were arrested Tuesday night for murder after an autopsy determined that Addysen Brooks Mayes died from toxic exposure to methadone. The mother, 21-year-old Brooks Ecton, was charged with first-degree wanton endangerment for leaving the child in the Blacks’ care on the night of Oct. 11. Police believe she knew the Blacks were active drug users and placed the child in danger.
